Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, has an array of therapeutic benefits that is taking the health and wellness industry by storm. CBD is a non-intoxicating compound that is found in the cannabis plant. CBD can treat an array of ailments, including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, etc.
Many of our patients were initially hesitant to try CBD because of the stigma that surrounds cannabis. The most frequent concern we get from our patients is if they would fail a drug test if they are using only CBD. If you are interested in reading this blog, click here.
For starters, CBD is often not a drug that is tested for in most drug tests. Most cannabis drug tests only test for THC and its metabolites. However, this is often not enough, and patients still want to know how long CBD stays in their system.
Like THC, CBD does get stored in the body after its therapeutic effects ware off. The amount of time CBD stays in the system relies on a bunch of factors, including:
In a 2016 study, researchers found that CBD that was administered in high doses could be found in urine for up to 24 hours. After 24 hours, the CBD was no longer detectable in the urine. Whereas, inhaling CBD through inhalation/smoking can be found in the bloodstream for up to 72 hours after smoking. When CBD is applied topically, it has a permeability rate that is ten times higher than THC. Additionally, CBD effects peak after about 90 minutes.

Everyone knows about THC and CBD, Indica and Sativa, but not many people know about Terpenes. Terpenes are also an extremely important component of the cannabis plant, as they are the essential oils of the plant. Basically, Terpenes give cannabis its vast range of flavours and aromas such as pine, citrus and musk. However, terpenes are more important than this. They also play an integral role in the “Entourage Effect”. This is the idea that the effects of strains are based on a myriad of factors including THC content, its synergies with other cannabinoids such as CBD, as well as a strains terpenoid profile. It is because of this, that medical consumers and cannabis advocates look for the strains terpene profile before consuming because increased or decreased levels of terpenes can call for different effects on the body. Terpenes You Should KnowBeta-Caryophyllene and Caryophyllene Oxide This is the most common terpene found in cannabis. It gives cannabis a peppery flavoured and gives cannabis its anti-fungal properties. This terpene is said to be best used for conditions such as dermatitis. Fun fact: it’s also what drug-sniffing dogs use to identify illegal products. Linalool This terpene gives cannabis a floral and citrus scent. Linalool is also found in Lavender. This terpene helps patients with combatting mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. Alpha- and Beta-Pinene This terpene provides cannabis with a pine-like smell, as this terpene is most commonly found in nature’s plants. Pinene helps make you feel alert and, helps with short-term memory retention. Pinene is also used as an antiseptic. Myrcene This terpene gives cannabis a smell of musk and cloves, with notes of citrus and tropical fruit. Myrcene is an anti-inflammatory, has relaxing and sedating properties, and helps aid muscle tension, insomnia and pain. Scientists believe it could be responsible for the “couch-lock” feeling cannabis provides. Limonene Limonene has a lemony-citrus flavour as it is also found in lemons. This terpene helps improve mood and relieve stress, can kill breast cancer cells, treats gastro-oesophageal reflux, and it’s also known for its antibacterial properties. If you look closely at cannabis, you will see that the leaves are covered in crystal-like globules that are sticky to the touch. These crystals hold thousands of compounds, which include cannabinoids, like THC and CBD, as well as terpenes. THC and CBD are only 2 cannabinoids, there are many more including CBN, CBC, CBL, THC, THCV, etc. In fact, each strain of cannabis is made up of a different set of cannabinoids. These cannabinoids work together to determine what your medicine is effective for and how effective it will be. The Entourage Effect is what makes cannabis so special because as a medicine, you can personalize its strain to treat different conditions. Each cannabinoid when isolated has its own set of medicinal benefits. However, when they are combined with others they enhance both theirs and the other cannabinoids effects. This is why cannabinoids are more effective together than they are alone. Here is an example, let’s say a patient is experiencing a lack of appetite and increased nausea. They may be prescribed a high-THC strain to help combat these adverse feelings. However, they would also want some CBD cannabinoids present to help reduce THC’s adverse side effects like paranoia. By only having one isolated cannabinoid, the patient wouldn’t experience this entourage effect, and thus, wouldn’t have an as positive or effective experience. Another good way to understand this concept is by thinking of food pairings. For this example, think of Sushi. A California roll might taste okay with just rice and avocado and seaweed paper, it might taste a bit better with the avocado and crab meat. But when you have all of the ingredients in a California roll it tastes the best and is the most satisfying! Contact MMC for access to safe & effective Medical Cannabis! Yet, hands down the most popular methods for cannabis consumption are smoking (combusting) and vaporizing. Many patients prefer to use this method because of how fast they can experience the effects. Yet, many do not know which one is the ‘healthier’ option. In short, vaporizing is considered a healthier alternative to smoking and is the recommended option by doctors. Vaporizing is also more discreet than smoking cannabis. And with the growing popularity of vaping e-cigarettes, it’s easier to blend in and curb the cannabis stigma. What is Vaporizing?Vaporizing, or vaping, is the process where heat is used to change a substance from a solid or liquid into a gas. Vaporizers house a small oven that heats– but does not burn the cannabis. Vapes heat to a perfectly calibrated temperature that allows cannabis to only release its cannabinoids (i.e. THC & CBD) into vapour which is then inhaled into the lungs. This is why vaping is rapidly gaining popularity as it does not burn cannabis and therefore does not produce as many harmful by-products. Vapes are sold in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be purchased at varying price points. In most cases, if you are a medical patient with the insurance coverage you can access a vape for free! Most vapes are portable handheld devices that are easy to travel with. Vaporizers work with ground dried cannabis and produce immediate effects when used. The high of Vaping is similar to smoking because when inhaled, the cannabinoids immediately reach the brain and enter the bloodstream within seconds. The effects of vaporizing last 2-3 hours and many consumers prefer its clean ‘burnt-popcorny’ taste. Why is Vaping Healthier Than Smoking?Vaping cannabis is similar to smoking the way that both involve the process of combustion and requires heat for the cannabinoids to be released into the body. However, the difference is that vaping removes the myriad of toxins that smoking cannabis produces. In fact, smoking cannabis can produce over 100 toxins, gases and particulates that are inhaled directly into the lungs. Smoking these chemicals can irritate the lungs and can cause respiratory infections and bronchitis. Smoking also depletes your immune system and can force your body to suffer from colds and flu longer.
Types of VaporizersThere are many different options for vapes, we recommend doing your research before you buy. You want to spend some money on a vape as you get what you pay for! Again, if you have access to insurance benefits contact us to see if you are entitled to a free vaporizer. Tabletop VaporizersThese are for patients who like to consume cannabis at home and don’t need a portable vape. These units are stationary, as they often plug into walls and are quite large and bulky. These vapes are often more advanced features and offer more precise temperature control. Temperature control is important for medical users as it allows the patient to tailor the temperature to each individual strain to properly experience the full-spectrum of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Health Canada has approved a tabletop vaporizer called The Volcano Medic vaporizer, to be used by medical cannabis patients at home. Portable Flower VaporizersThis type of vaporizer is ideal for consumers who want to travel with their cannabis. The downside is cheaper models often do not offer specific temperature control. Even the more expensive options are limited with temperature control because they run on battery power. However many do prefer this option because they can leave home with it and can switch between strains easily. Pricing can range anywhere from $40-$600. Health Canada has approved the Mighty Medic vaporizer as a medical device for medical cannabis patients. Contact MMC for access to safe & effective Medical Cannabis! Not sure what decarbing is? No problem! You have come to the right place. Decarbing allows you to convert the THCA found in your dried buds and trim to THC. By doing this, your edibles and tinctures will be more potent, will take effect more quickly, and will make them safer and more effective. Decarbing most often occurs when cannabis is smoked, meaning you have to do this before you start the cooking/baking process. Here are the 3 steps needed to Decarb your cannabis!
In order to Decarb you will need the following:
If you are using sugar leaves or kief you can proceed to the next step. If you are using full buds you will need to use a grinder to grind them roughly.
You will want to preheat the oven to 220 F / 150 C. While the oven is preheating, you can line a baking sheet with the parchment paper. Spread your cannabis evenly over the sheet, and if you see any big pieces, you will want to break them up with your hands. If you have too much cannabis that it doesn’t fit evenly on the pan you will want to divide the batch in two. You want it to look like one fairly thin layer. If you crowd it, it will not dry properly.
Once the oven is at the desired temperature, you will want to put the baking sheet into the oven. If you are using dried trim, kief you will want to keep the tray inside for 25 minutes. If you are using fresher cannabis you may want to keep the tray inside for an additional 25 minutes. A hygrometer can be a useful tool to help you see how much moisture is left. Finally, once the cannabis is nice and dry you will want to let it sit out on the counter until it has cooled down.

An entire month dedicated to the appreciation of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) locally, nationally, and internationally. Occupational Therapy Day is at the end of the month, on October 27th, 2019. This year’s theme is the role of OT’s in, “Improving World Health and Wellbeing” for people worldwide. To showcase the value of OT’s to patients, read about Judy’s story below: OT’s approaches to helping and educating Judy, allow her to manage her life at home safely and remain connected with her community and loved ones. Always an incredibly active and social person, Judy has enjoyed spending time with friends and family, going to her local community center, or visiting a shopping mall nearby. Now entering her early 80s, Judy’s loved ones have grown concerned at her recent decline in engaging in her favourite activities. Although Judy still valued all of these things, she had become increasingly worried about leaving her home. Judy suffered a few minor falls in the past few years, one of which led to a minor sprain in her ankle. Since the injury, Judy had begun to isolate herself, rarely leave her home, and as a result, no longer engage in her favourite past times. Recently, Judy suffered a more serious injury and fell down the steps on her front porch. Although they were concerned for her safety, Judy’s loved ones knew that a senior home is not what she wanted. Feeling incredibly concerned, Judy’s daughter learned of the field of Occupational Therapy. An OT worked with Judy and her daughter to enable her to live her life safely at home and increase her involvement in the community. Based on thorough research and observation, the OT created the following action plan:
Thanks to this comprehensive action plan, Judy has now returned to being an active member of her community. Without the help of the OT, Judy would not have had the confidence to return to her active lifestyle. It is because of this that vape oil consumers will take the vape cartridge and turn it upside down to see if the bubble moves fast or slow. If the bubble moves slowly, it makes the Again, I am not a doctor, but what I know is that when vitamin E acetate is vaporized, it creates microscopic globules of oil that attach to the capillaries inside the lungs and limits oxygen intake. We need the regulators to recognize that legal vape cartridges are the best way to protect the public because we can at least exercise some control measures. If we stop legal vape cartridges, the illegal black market industry in this area will flourish, and more people will die. Some exceptions can be seen in the workplace, while travelling with cannabis, place of residence, growing your own (more than the allotted 4 plants), etc. What benefits would someone expect to receive after obtaining their medical license in comparison to purchasing cannabis through the recreational system? As a medical cannabis patient, you have several different benefits as opposed to the recreational market, the major benefit is financial. With a license, you have the right to apply your purchases as a medical expense on your taxes. Many License Producers (the same companies producing to the legal recreational market) will absorb the additional SIN tax. Along with more affordable prices, a license will always provide you access, we have seen the recreational markets run out of CBD (the non-psychoactive of cannabis) on many occasions. Also, with a license, your medicine is delivered directly and discreetly to your home or doctor’s office for pick up. The first step we tell patients is to have a discussion with your family physician first. Your family physician will provide you with guidance, it may not always be the answer you want, but it is always something to consider. If you have had this conversation and your doctor disagrees with Medical Cannabis it is important to inquire why. We have found that many doctors are not comfortable with cannabis because they are not educated on the subject. If this is the case, we recommend you speak to a clinic like MMC. At MMC, we have educated cannabis experts that are fully licensed to prescribe cannabis. Our physicians are always researching and are up to date with current Medical Cannabis policies and studies. Quick Additional Benefits Coverage As more and more insurance companies are considering adding medical cannabis in their policies, a medical cannabis patient with a valid license will be the first to be considered for this coverage. Guidance A license allows our team to guide and provide recommendations on your cannabis use to help aid in your treatment as opposed to recreational where there are laws against providing dosage and guidelines for a medical user. However, the Canadian government has recently changed their approach and have revealed that cannabis pardons are now finally available. As of August 1st, 2019, Canadians who have been convicted of simple cannabis possession can apply to have their record suspended. This application process is FREE (it normally costs 631$) and the 6 months wait period has been eliminated. BUT WAIT. There are a few things to keep in mind about this process.
Simple pot possession means under 30 grams and no other drugs involved. Applicants do not need to submit court documents to prove it was only cannabis. As long as the criminal record check or police records show their conviction was only cannabis for possession, that will be fine.
The Canadian government glibly announced that other countries are not bound by Canada’s laws. In normal-people language, this means that Canadians with pot pardons should still prepare for the worst when approaching the US border or entering other countries. On a more positive note, Canadians within Canada will find it easier to access jobs, rent apartments, and volunteer once their pardon is approved. And pot pardons cannot be revoked if you are later charged with an offence. If you or someone you know has been affected by a Cannabis Conviction please contact our friends at Millars Law.
